You are both right, Phil and Tom.
It's been my view for a long time that we need to reduce and not increase car traffic.
To reduce petrol consumption not increase it.
This is a very unpopular stance of mine, that usually meets with a hail of rebuke, for example when challenging the idea to add runways to UK airports.
It's apparently "modern" to build ever higher numbers of cars, and add runways to airports so people can fly around the world, and if we can't find the petrol, we'll burn the corn and maiz in the engines!
China and India have been churning out cars by the tens of millions, buying aeroplanes for people to fly in, and so too have many other "emerging" countries.
As for arms exports, that's an old one: don't sell arms to all these countries.
But, alas, they will. After all, they say, if WE don't, someone else will sell the arms (they all say this!)
Add to that, that investors are encouraged to "invest" their money "over here".
So everyone should send their money out of their country over, buy a car, fly by plane, and then when the food runs short, erm...well tut tut!
I slowly and gradually gave up repeating myself with unpopular views.
So if corn is running short, and people risk malnutrition even more than before, not really much to say anymore... said it all long ago.
The assertion that we should be producing here in Britain more agricultural products, and importing less food, and selling some of ours abroad in return for money..., rather than exporting weapons and playing the role of the "world banker", leads nowhere.
I haven't even got an orchatd of my own to cultivate, so "if you can't help yourself, doctor, then how will you help others?"
Or is it: "doctor, help yourself!"
So, I'll decide to retreat from this thread with a reply: that works both ways!
Sorry me old chum, but I can't help you now!
I've been told we're not supposed to plant orchards, so have got nothing to offer you!
Bye!
