This is just so depressing - I mean it really is - every thread vaguely connected with developing Dover ends up with the same people fundamentally saying the same things, dont any of you have a different tune to play?

I mean there are the 2 ostriches banging on about keep the Charter, one of you essentially playing Yosser Hughes, a fair few of you telling us all that your way and only yours is the way forward etc, etc.

Peter and his fellow Peoples Port chaps at least have a clear plan for what they want to do if they are successful and how they propose to help the town help itself move forward.

Dover suffers from 4 things as far as I can tell

    1. Too few middle class families to make an effective difference to community & voluntary activities - whether you like it or not it is generally this socio-economic group that has the time, money, intellect and desire to make a difference

    2. The demise of manufacturing during the late 70's through the mid 80's recession ripped jobs out of the town and replaced it with a perennial unemployment problem that degrades both those in that situation and the town itself

    3. An Officer lead council that patently does not want to change - as change is scary and might mean they actually have to really do something for the town

    4. Too many people with a "Cant Do" attitude, which frankly just encourages the council officers to do nothing and the political classes to bicker endlessly
