Seems to be changing its name from Gardens to Park the latest to call it that is our MP.
To my mind a park is a much larger entity with flower beds and at least one pond in it. The gardens are pleasant with the Yoof bit and the river bordering it and it has a nice bandstand but It is mostly used for events in the Summer and a cut through for shoppers the rest of the year.

years ago it was called a park and we had park keepers there to.
Where the name garden came from I do not know but it was called a park first.

We even had a GOLF 18 hole potting green cost of going round was six old pence.

In the Oxford Dictionary( Park is a large enclosed piece of ground in a town 0rnamentally laid out for recreation and seating it can have some trees round it. So that is why it was called a park also it can have a green area.

I had thought it was always called gardens, was a timber yard before the war and not so long ago (1990's) I believe DDC wanted to turn it into a shopping centre! The 1st dtiz?

I heard that about the shopping centre coming under consideration, not a very good idea to lose the little green space we have in the town. the land to the side of Morrison's was opened as a public green space a few years back but has been neglected since.

It is a shame the area to the side of Morrisons was not paved with tables and chairs together with direct access from the cafe.
As Howard says it is neglected and I have never seen anyone use it since it opened.

The area to the side of Morrisons is not obviously a public area, maybe there should be some signage?

I doubt if signage would make a difference as it is not alluring to the public with a sprung gate that could take fingers off, long grass that hides dog toffee, beer cans, 2 very uncomfortable looking benches etc. Maybe Jan is right and providing the furniture for a picnic area together with routine maintenance would make it useful?
