I don't see the point of the police having advance copies of the passenger list as no addresses are there. If the police are looking for someone with a fairly common name then they need more info.
Passport checks by the French were cursory last time I went across, they just looked for the expiry date.

passports are checks are carried by both in full detail,plus when you now book you have to give them your passport number etc

That sounds like UK Exit Checks, designed to detect over-stayers: we know who came in, deduct those who have left and you have those still here. Somewhere. (Sigh.)

When my passport expired it had a photograph of me taken 16 years before and to be perfectly honest a lot of my boyish good looks had gone yet I don't remember anyone looking at the photo or my face let alone both of them. I remember reading very long ago(must be well over ten years) that the technology for biometric foolproof passports was available and would cost no more overall.

We all have biometric passports now and then cost of the he passport has reduced by £5 pounds in recent years. No passport will ever be foolproof.
