rare enough to get thought provoking documentaries nowadays as it is, without them going out at the same time.

21:4594647I haven't got a TV. I didn't want one. There is one downstairs, but I couldn't be bothered.
But somehow I keep up with what's going on.

I didn't see it but I think the idea is great.
What most children at school (those who attend that is) miss, is discipline and if this can be restored to schools, it will be a job very well done.
My fear is that in this PC and "lovey-dovey" World, they won't be allowed to do it, due to the children's human rights, so it won't have any real power - I hope I'm wrong on this.
Roger
I think its a great idea, to many scared teachers around these days get disapline into schools it may have an all round good result on the streets etc.

Bad behaviour in schools and lack of respect for teachers has gone on for long enough, an excellent idea to bring in ex-servicemen.

i didn't see it but the idea sounds a good one, serviceman get a more rounded view of life than someone that comes straight out of university or teachers training college.
I was at a school recently where i witnessed a child verbally having at go at the teacher , i was shocked i wouldnt dare to of spoken to my teacher like this child did , my dad said years ago he would of been punished by the headmaster.

Half the teachers at my school were ex military, not a deliberate policy but they had got scholarships after the war and trained to be teachers.
Worked well, we respected them for what they had done and they took no bad behaviour from us.

It was a very interesting programme and if the example they gave of the school in the USA the sooner the ex-military become teachers the better.
Not so many pupil teacher confrontations and more respect from the pupils, something that seems to be missing in so many schools.
It must be on iplayer for those that missed the programme, it is well worth watching.

Just watched it on BBCiplayer after reading your views on the programme, very interesting, the results speak for themselves.
A great import from the other side of the pond with improvements both in English and Maths here and in the US

, it was also interesting to note that one ex-RM Captain is now a headmaster at a school in Canterbury.
There was a cadet force at my old school which everyone who joined really enjoyed.
