This is understandable, when so much still usable food is discarded, whether by householders or big supermarkets - I understand that some super stores are now passing on their 'end of shelf life' food to charities.
'End of shelf' is NOWHERE near the end of use by date. It is sad that so-called 'good business practices' have come to this !!
A friend of ours said his new 'food-waste' bin was not big enough - he had just tried to put into it three melons ('bought too much' he said), which were still OK to eat but just not wanted.

Surplus melons, cut into cubes and freeze, then add to smoothies!

Is it a generation thing to buy too much food, my daughter often throws away food when she has bought something "because it was on special offer".

Peter and Bern - good idea for freezing surplus fruits - lovely, and there are many other things which can be frozen to be used later.
An elderly friend who lives on her own says because she orders from Tesco for home delivery she worries she will not order enough, and then has too much and throws away good food !!! Oh dear!!!
I told her she could make her surplus bread into sandwiches and freeze.

Or garlic bread, breadcrumbs or stuffing, all of which freeze well.
