Vic you are right there are lots of fish species that are still abundant, however it is the popular fish (Cod, Herring etc.) that are threatened.
What needs to happen is for people to change their eating habits and start eating things like Gurnard, Ling, Coley etc. thus giving the white fish a chance to recover.
Coupled with this fisherman need to do more in terms of the gear they use, changing net mesh sizes, net styles etc. to limit by-catch. their are certain methods that should be banned because of the indiscriminate way they catch fish, e.g. purse-seine nets and bottom trawling. Also they can look at alternatives such as long line and species specific drift gill nets.
John, I wanted to join the EU, but one that ONLY enacted laws that really needed to be pan-european, that promoted and protected free trade amongst its members, that ensured their was freedom of movement of people. Further in order to ensure the second and third points they would need over time to work with (not impose upon) national governments to equalise the rights, duties and responsibilities of people and organisations; though this should only have been done through consensus.
