But yes the seafront is looking good today. Pictures very good again Howard.

Lovely colours and Dover always looks better with those wonderful cruise liners as a backdrop. Long may it continue.

that explains it paul, must relate to last evening's rescue.
usually they have an open weekend around this time of year, no doubt they will keep us informed of the dates.

Agree - Dover's seafront always looks great. However, certainly not as busy as one would expect for a half term holiday. When I was a kid the beach would have been packed on a day like today. Nowadays, there seem to be more children out shopping or at home playing computer games. I must be getting old!

i think you have opened a can of worms here kevin, a recent report found that a large proportion of children living in thanet had never been to the beach.
funding has come in to help change that and encourage the young to learn about and enjoy the coastline nearby.

If the children are not going swimming or fishing there is not much to entice the little dears to the area. A picnic on the beach does not have the same attraction as it did when my children were young.

I also love our seafront, great place to go this week with my son, he had a fab time and I relaxed and read a book xxx
I, too, have always loved the seafront. I just do not believe that the recent works have improved it in any significant way, which might encourage in more visitors. How about a little land train, along the seafront and up the POW pier? Or a bandstand, or a couple of permanent roundabouts for kiddies?

Some great ideas, Diana. I like the improvements to the seafront, but I agree more should be done to attract families with children. Hence my comments on the front page about Dover going for a Blue Flag. The other idea would be to have more events on the seafront. On a visit to Bournemouth a couple of years ago they had a firework display every Saturday throughout the school summer holidays. Of course, all these things require imagination and money, both of which seem to be lacking.

i don't think we can compare bourmemouth with dover, the former is much larger and is one of the places that people actually take a week or fortnight holiday, they have hotels and guesthouses doing good business so plenty of money is coming into the town.
there is also plenty of night life to attract evening and weekend visitors and if i remember correctly some beautifully laid out gardens.
i am warming to the blue flag idea now but that can only be within the control of the port owners.

Here's the road train that runs from St Helier to St Aubins along the seafront. It's very popular.

I agree with everyone on this, those who like it and those who don't
Designwise it looks great and good to see it get an award. But - once you have finished admiring it, it is a bit sterile.
I loved the beach in the 60s and 70s - boat plots and huts on the town beach (which has disappeared under the dual carriageway), the fountains mentioned on other thread, the wheeled landing stage for trips round the harbour, the watersports centre where I learned to sail which was no more than a well worn garden shed, and the old maroon bus going to the end of the Prince of Wales pier where you could relax in the most comfortable bamboo chairs and on a sunny day imagine you were in the south of France.
And as a very young kid always hoping I'd see the train ( a real one, Marek!) going along the seafront to the Eastern Docks, I'd love to see a picture of that and I'm sure on here will have one!

evocative post from ray.
mention of the south of france puts me in mind of ramsgate waterfront on a nice day.
it is agreed that we love our seafront, just a matter of making the most of it.
a road train summer is an obvious one, a regular flea market during the year is another one.

If we want to boost tourism for families we have to provide something to keep them interested. When they have done the museum, castle and other historical places (if they are open) what is left, nothing.
The town including the seafront has to move on and draw in the potential holiday maker. With heavy heart I have to say if I was a holiday maker Dover would be at the bottom of my list of places to visit.
