For years this country had one of the best mail services one could wish for, now it is awful. Letters being routinely delivered late lunchtime here in the middle of town is disgraceful. What happened to the early morning post that we used to get, even in rural Tilmanstone we used to get our post around 11.00am.
I am not blaming the frontline postmen, it is the Royal Mail system and management.

Society has gone downhill since the only thing that mattered was the base line on the dividend. Cut jobs and services to the quick, they still run, but are so threadbare as to be wafer thin. A slight cog in the wheel goes missing and thats it...threadbare. Its all since the Americans invented time and motion study..before that we had cohesive society.

I do 90% of my shopping on-line.
Just waiting now for a final present that is two days late, but should be here in plenty of time. Then I have my main Xmas shop from Sainsbury all booked up and awaited for Friday.
I hate shopping specially when the shops are crowded.... on-line works great for me.

I do a lot of shopping online and not just at Christmas. Thankfully here in Essex we are blessed with a wonderful regular postman and cheerful and helpful sorting office staff. The longest I have had to wait in the sorting office is about 15 minutes and that is rare. I have never had to wait outside the building either. Post is normally delivered between 11-11:15 am, you can practically set your watch by it. I appreciate not all areas of the country are similarly blessed.

on line shopping is perfect for people who work for home or if one of the family is at home all day.
however the report refers to delivery persons sticking a card through the door without even knocking, many people i know have complained of that.
the other main courier companies do try harder, they seem to try quite a few houses before giving up as they do not have a close at hand depot where people can collect.

I had a Christmas card delivered to me today from Southampton addressed to 284 Long Hill Road, Dover, New Hampshire USA!
I reposted it, I doubt if it will get there in time!

a lady in westbury road had a card addressed to someone in dorset, neither the road name, town or post code were similar to her own.
how do they slip through the state of the art sorting machines?

Even the great Fortnum and Masons are having difficulty, would hate to be waiting on a delivery just think of the disappointment if your parcel does not arrive in time.

I ordered a Christmas present online on 9th. of November and it hasn't arrived yet, so I've had to buy something else - very annoying.

Jan- you said: "even in rural Tilmanstone we used to get our post around 11.00am."
We still get an excellent service here from the postmen, with letters and parcels,
but as I think our village is at the end of a round, we don't get early post any more, it is very often mid day or later.
