Nice to read a post showing some understanding of the situation. I have spent many days working and staying in Calais and your assessment of the local situation is spot on.

What you won't hear Sunak et al say is that there is no legal way of forcing the French (or anyone else for that matter) to take back asylum seekers without our formally leaving the UNHCR. Prior to Brexit, we had the option of returning them to the country of departure but that, of course, no longer applies.

Despite the rhetoric, there is no such thing as an illegal asylum seeker. If no asylum is sought, then migrants can be repatriated a.s.a.p. If asylum is claimed, we are legally bound to afford due process all the while we remain signatory to UNHCR. How quick or exacting that process is, is for the UK government to decide. Equally, there are no legal constraints on where it takes place. Which is why accepting the French offer of processing them on French soil, never mentioned by this government, is so worthy of further exploration.
