    some points on barryw's posting

in the days that barryw speaks of i was considering going onto the council
some 25 years or more ago.

ray norley was a very controversial conservative cllr for elms vale at the time, but could easily at times have fitted into a national front candidate.
but he stood his ground on most issues, but those were the days when the tories won these seats, thankfully that changed, firstly to philip king(lib dem) then to labour.

but to the papers, in those days the reporters were local, on the story very quick, and more importantly they were trusted.

they also had offices in dover which people local used to pop in with stories
this was all lost when both papers closed there dover offices.

just going back though, in those council days there were a lot of characters
    all different identities
sadly a lot of this has been lost
