Heard a bit about it on the radio this morning, the crowd were certainly letting their feelings be heard! The playing for position has gone on in all forms of sport since tournaments began, just sounds like these were not particularly good at disguising it.

Yes heard this on the radio as well...the fans were disgusted. They paid up to £75 for a seat..just to see people trying to lose. yes trying to lose!!
This so they could meet preferably easier opponents in the next round. One chap said he had been to more than 500 badminton tournaments and this was the worst spectacle he had ever seen and in the Olympic games too.
Oh dear! a further look at the rules might be required.

They showed a clip on the TV news this morning with the referee giving the players a talking too, the whole situation is disgraceful and the teams involved should be banned from the next Olympics for cheating.

Devils advocate, are they not trying their best to win by avoiding a tough opponent that may prevent their medal chances

Serves the sport right for changing the structure of the competition. Badminton should not be played in group stages.

we had this in cricket ----- ian botham and his somerset team , the way they sorted it was to give winner of group home tie and pay check
but of course you can not do this in badminton
perhaps one way is for top of group to play at say 8-9pm and 2nd in group to play at 11pm , but would that work ?

No end of football tournaments where teams have stage managed 0-0 draws to both qualify from a group, I watched a programme recently about our gold medalists in the mens sculls pairs in the 1948 Olympics, they purposely lost their heat in the hope of missing the favourites in the semi, it backfired on them as the favourites did not win their heat and they had to beat them to stay in the competition. Competitors will always be trying to look one step ahead.

good point brian, another aspect is the placing of bets by people who plan to lose.
the ones yesterday were hot favourites so bets placed on their opponents would have yielded good returns.

sadly as much as we may not like it and it is against the spirit of the olympics, it still is able to be done via the rules
its the rules that need changing

kyle mentioned the issue of group matches, this was also raised by a former olympic silver medallist. that will change.
martin mentions football tournaments and i do remember a match many years ago between austria and germany where they contrived a goalless draw so that both teams could progress.
since then the final matches in groups are played at the same time to stop this happening.
