John Howard Davies, who died on August 22 aged 72, played Oliver Twist in David Lean's celebrated Dickens adaptation (1948); as an adult he directed and produced some of the greatest comedy series in British television.
One of my all time favourite films

Thanks Marek.

Yes I do Marek, but didn't know what he'd done as an adult - now, thanks to you, I do.
The older guy in the photo - is that Fagin or Bill Sykes ? looks like the guy who played Long John Silver in the TV series ?

Robert Newton. Excellent actor and legendary boozer. His claim to fame is he gave all movie and tv pirates that famous accent.

I had not realised John Howard Davies was involved with quite so many comedy series.
Roger, Robert Newton played the evil Bill Sykes, Alec Guinness was Fagin, singer Anthony Newley was the Artful Dodger.

Yes indeed Jan, and wasnt Robert Newton the best Bill Sykes ever. A really nasty toad for sure. The rooftop scenes near the end were just fab..that David Lean knew how to make a film.

I agree it must have been such a hard act to follow for Oliver Reed who showed his own acting skills by bringing back to life a very menacing Bill Sykes.

Thanks Jan - I wasn't sure which part he played.
Maybe they'll put it on the TV again soon.
