OFT Cracks Down on Misleading Supermarket Special Offers
Following an investigation into the way supermarkets display their prices, the OFT has found that there is inconsistency in the way the law is being applied and has established principles to ensure greater transparency and fairness over prices between supermarkets.
Laura Sandys MP - who established the Smarter Consumer Commission to support families with rising food prices - said:
"With families' budgets already stretched, shoppers need to know they can rely on special offers and promotions really being bargains. Particularly as food prices are rising, prices and promotions need to be fair and transparent so families can make informed decisions when they are browsing supermarket aisles. It is no longer fair for supermarkets to artificially inflate prices to make a later discount more attractive or to suggest a multi-pack is better value when it is not.
"Through the Smarter Consumer Commission, I have been calling on the relevant authorities to investigate. I am pleased to see that we now have a clear set of OFT principles for supermarkets to abide by. Eight supermarkets have already pledged to sign-up and I hope that the others will follow suit. Today marks an important step forward in preventing shoppers being ripped off."
Aldi, Co-op, Lidl, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco, and Waitrose have already agreed to adopt the OFT principles to ensure that shoppers' are not misled by pricing and promotions.
How about that for a price cut !!
