At least 80 persons mainly teenagers have been shot and killed in Norway at a seaside camp. Early reports indicate it was a far right ethnic Norwegian extremist that is responsible. The man was apparently dressed in a PoliceUniform.
The news is headlining on BBC. So these early reports are very sketchy. Police confirm they have arrested a 32 year old man.

This awful event seems to be the only news on BBC Breakfast at the moment, the two government ministers on TV at the moment are in an obvious state of shock.
What kind of person can go and shoot so many innocent young people, a bombing is truly awful but it is impersonal this shooting is not.

Truly awful event ..shooting 80 young people like that one by one is truly horrifying. The grief for the families will be awful, losing young daughters, sons. And in Norway of all places. It just goes to show that it can happen anywhere if it can happen in Norway.

absolutely stunned when i heard that, it will change the way of life in norway.
it has always been a very open society with no great need for security.
A terrible and shocking event - I could wish the news channels and journalists would stop trying to make a really shocking and tragic event into a more appalling event than it needs to be. It is terrible enough without them poking at people to describe it in yet more detail during their shock, or trying to drag out "shock horror" type of information. Typically they are stirring it up and giving half-arsed information and speculation which could be damaging and prejudicial.

i agree, some of the probing of witnesses was well over the top and many were clearly very upset about the questions being asked.

This is a by-product of the 24 hour news channels. We saw it to some degree with the hacking scandal too. It is almost news invention as they have a heck of a lot of air time to fill..afterwards there is often a need to backtrack.

Another example of that, PaulB, is the way the media have managed to associate the St George's flag with 1 football hooligans and 2 right wing extremists. That would not have happened if the media had not given those groups of idiots the oxygen of publicity.

That kind of news-creation and associations happen a lot. Crass and lazy journalism at its worst, and leaving in its wake a trail of destruction.

It is truly awful and to think that a Norwegian man (extreme right-wing or not) can shoot and kill so many young Norwegian people.
He is accused of letting off the bomb in the capital near Government building too.
It is too awful to think about, but those directly involved - the familes etc. have no option.

It was also reported that security in Norway was very lapse, people able to walk freely close to areas and a culture of this ind.
This guy appears to have links to ultra right wing fanatical groups.
It's a realy tragic event, and thoughts go with all the families

Not sure how many forumites aware of the small garden at junction of Pencester and Maison Dieu Rd that was a gift from Norway.
A local Castle Ward resident (Sheila Pople) asked me if as a mark of respect the Norwegian flags could be flown at half mast.
As this is a DDC site I am pleased to say that with the help of Nigel flags will be hoisted to half staff in time for the memorial service in London and will remain over the weekend.

Yes, I think I know it Pat, its the one opposite St Pauls church, you often see someone sitting there taking a rest on the bench and people cut across it to go to Pencester.I wasn't aware it was a gift from Norway, what a lovely request from Sheila, good to hear that it is happening

there is a plaque, it featured in the "where is it" thread, but is only totally visble in winter due to the floral displays that grow and mask a lot of it in summer.
