Over 5 of my yearly wages equals £100,000
Would the Council like to employ me on £50,000 and save everyone in the area money?

Sometimes I think that university degrees are the result of three years spent replacing common sense with a narrow set of skills and knowledge, and a superior attitude. (Tin helmet and flak jacket please).

There is certainly a large percentage of degree courses that are a waste of three years of a persons life. It used to be attractive to employ a graduate because you knew they had to have completed a difficult and challenging degree course, know far too many doss around for 3 yrs and think they deserve high praise and high pay because of it!

Depends on the degree Both . my sons obtained First class Honours in Engineering. One did it part time took six years as he was employed by a company who gave him time off to attend university .My Daughter obtained a second then went on whilst working full time to get a Masters .In no way are any of them superior .How could they be with a down to earth Mother .They all work very hard and richly deserve the results of long hours of study.
There Father would have been very proud.

Three of my grandchildren went to university, one is a solicitor, one is a teacher the other is unemployed and homeless although he unofficially stays with his girlfriend and gets temporary jobs, my two other grandchildren went straight into work after leaving school.
I think university is a complete waste of time for far to many saddling them with unwanted debt (fees and overdrafts) which is not the way to start their adult life.

Things went downhill when courses like Media Studies were brought in, from what people tell me Engineering is the most difficult with a good knowledge of Physics needed.

I worked in a university for 35 years. Things went rapidly downhill when Tony Blair decided 50% of school-leavers should study for a degree.
Stupid idea, nowhere near 50% of jobs need a degree and nowhere near 50% of students are capable of benefitting from getting one.
(Though of course the figure was achieved with a fudge by rebranding colleges and the certificates they awarded as universities offering degrees, and with a few exceptions, without the staff or facilities to provide one up to the standard of traditional universities.)

With the amount of rain we've had recently Sue they shouldn't be penniless!

Blair's plan was simply a way of reducing the unemployment figures, he forgot that after spending all that extra time in education graduates would not want or feel expected to do 'menial' jobs.
