  The NHS seem to be addressing this presently in numerous ways. For example senior medical students are assisting in surgery hands on, making diagnoses and presentations to their senior Consultants, been assigned to a patient alongside their senior qualified team, running some A&E departments accompanied by senior fully qualified Nurses with Consultants on bleep call throughout the hospital and much much more. This is part of setting them up in good steed for the time when their August month comes to the fore as Junior Doctors.
  
  I guess they just need to make sure that not too many senior Consultants are away during the August period as this is unfair to Patients and indeed to the brand new Junior Doctor. Its common sense surely.
  
  I must add that our future Junior Doctors(my own daughter Briony included) looking their own August straight in the eye are working 12 hour shifts both night and day so hopefully their Consultants will be there to support them.

  Lol! Peter shure you certainly have to be Oirish to write that so you do
  
  You know sometimes that is almost true, you see they have what is called 'The Take' every three weeks or so. It consists of 32 hours, yes you read that right but it is broken up by 4 to 5 hrs in between shifts. You have to be young to survive

  I got hopefull seeing that post headline that someone was about to put the NHS out of its misery.
  
  How people can keep on supporting this out-of-date and inefficient means of delivering health I really cannot fathom. That NHS cult is the real killer here and we all deserve a better health system and should learn from what they do on the continent.

  tut tut barry,it does keep people alive 99.9% of the time,pay as you go for being ill is allright if you can afford to do so.some people can hardly afford 3 packs of parracetamol for a quid these days,[poundland price that is].

  the issue of long hours for junior doctors has been an issue since i can remember.
  
  hardly fair on doctors or patients to have someone half asleep diagnosing a problem.
