There must be far too much wastage in hospitals; many patients are given their order sheet and when the food arrives, it can be so unappealing, it gets left, then the catering staff just take the plate away and the nursing staff have no idea whether or how much, patients have eaten and so many end up malnourished.

Several years ago I spent four months in K and C,through illness and the inability to eat the food I lost eight stone.
Wendy's home made soups every day built me back up again together with cheeky Indian and Chinese take aways delivered by
a motor cyclist in full attire. The Sister and nurses were not amused but also enjoyed some of the take a ways.
Out Sourcing of services such as catering, transport and cleaning have not been successful....

the only night i have spent in hospital saw me treated to a bag of crisps and a bone dry tuna sandwich for evening meal - corn flakes with hot milk for breakfast. they wanted me to stay for lunch but i opted to go over the wall.

Whilst in QEQM I was told that the cost per person per day for food was under £2.
The meals looked FAIRLY good but no salad and no fresh veg, all cooked from frozen.
I was over 2 weeks asking to see the dietician as I can't take maize or wheat, then I was told you need to see the catering manager. By the time he came to see me with assistant it was 3 days before I came home. I said why did you list I could have the omelette when it comes up on the plate with sweet corn (maize)'. He w as amazed and didn't know sweet corn was maize ,, nor cornflour was maize, and apologised, three weeks too late ! Offering then nice salads etc !!

That does not surprise me at all Kath, inefficiency and ignorance rule.
I remember watching James Martin trying to improve hospital food, his TV series should be compulsary viewing for all hospital caterers.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.
