If you have a hospital appointment in France, unless you are at death’s door, you must register as soon as you enter showing health card, photo ID and insurance even if you have seen the same doctor 100 times. Medical staff are not involved. Presume anyone who doesn’t have these documents will have to get out their credit card. A friend who had a hip replacement in Paris had to pay upfront in cash before they would even give her an admission date. I read the other day that someone had to produce ID to use his local recycling centre and my brother was once asked for a household bill when he wanted to test drive a car (accompanied by the car salesman!). Needless to say he went to another car dealer. Bizarre that no ID is needed to get free health care.
