this is on our events page but more detail in this press release kindly sent in by marie kelly-thomas.artistic director
of dover youth theatre.
Fourteen young actors aged between 14-19 years bring the Government Inspector to life at The Roundhouse Theatre Dover Discovery Centre next wed 21st Nov and Thurs 22nd Nov at 7.30pm. Dover Youth Theatre senior students are delighted to present this classic farce. Written by Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol in 1834, in less than two years the comedy was the greatest theatrical event of the season. The play has as much resonance today as it did when it was first presented.
The entire play is based on mistaken identity and on the panic caused - for good reasons - among the officials. The actual theme is supposed to have been suggested by Pushkin and is daring in its exposure of scandal and corruption
.The play is set in a small town where the mayor receives a message that there is to be a visit by a government inspector who will be travelling incognito. The officials are anxious to get the town straightened out and vie with each other to impress a man they believe to be the inspector with hilarious results. This fact paced farce does contain some mild adult content and is unsuitable for young children.
James Coe takes on the role of the leader of the council while PIers Thomas and his assistant Emily Burrows milk the town for all they can. The play is directed by Tamzin Dunstone and Marie Kelly-Thomas . Admission is £8 students £5 . Box Office : 01304 202544 .

A plot reworked to great effect in an episode of Fawlty Towers*. Which featured Bernard Cribbins as a Rep travelling in spoons.
