  "Under the apprenticeship, due to be introduced next year, new recruits will undertake a three-year course, spending 80% of their time on the frontline, and the rest completing their degree while receiving a salary."
  
  So if recruitment levels stay the same that equates to a further 20% reduction of front line police, but at least they'll be able to write their own names!

  It reminds me of the good old days when I used to have employment which involved working with Special Branch.
  
  Whereas Plod tended to patrol in pairs they always went around in threes.
  
  Apparently one could read, one could write, and the third kept an eye on the two intellectuals.

  difficult area locals want to see police on the beat but to do so will often slow down more major cases because they are on foot.

  Wonderful logic as prison officers are leaving the service in droves because of poor working conditions and violence against them by inmates. They expect someone who has studied for years to be interested in taking up a low paid and unpleasant job.
