interesting article on the front page about the harbour board handed over land to the kent wildlife trust.
i always thought that the land could be better used and with all the housing being planned for the area this will act as an excellent buffer.

Interesting that this is announced just prior to the decision on the port from the government. I cant help but wonder has the plan been in the pipeline for a long time or is this a sweetener from DHB.
Memo to self, I must stop being so cynical.

if that is the case then the proposed people's port has been effective without even coming into being.

Certainly Howard without the Peoples Port it is very doubtful this would ever have come about.

Whatever the reasons behind these moves..well it really doesnt matter, because we, the public, are the winners, we are in a win-win situation when we see the Port becoming ever more involved in the town. We have carried stories about a number of involvements now and this is the latest...and its a good one.
The Kent Wildlife Trust are clearly thrilled with this new move, the total area of land involved is almost 90 acres which is quite a chunk for them to work with. To quote from the frontpage...
"This will be a long and difficult task but the outcome, the return of a rare, beautiful landscape, rich in wildlife, will be a treasure for Dover and its residents."
So sayeth the chap from Kent Wildlife Trust, John Bennett its CEO.

Nothing being promised by DHB can legally be done as long as they are still a trust port.

i did wonder that but the article stressed that only management of the land had been handed over, d.h.b. would still own the site.
I think it is rather unfortunate to have the painting in the background of
Shakespeare Cliff and the Beach.................considering.....

Peter would that be a criminal offence?.. or hypothetically something that such an organisation will do if they are allowed to get away with it-like the many untested forays into illegality by powerful corporate bodies seen over the years. On the other hand, in finality, would it just be down to civil litigation to check such an organisation?

It would be ultra vires and could later be set aside by the courts.

Yes, now I understand that Ulta Vires means acting outside of your scope or remit. I take it that this would refer to ignoring your articles of association in the case of an ordinary limited company. Seems logical that the rules would be much stricter for a 'government' related body like a 'trust' port- owing to their requirement to act in the public interest.

I am sure that many people will love this idea of a nature reserve, 90 acres big, right here in Dover...and managed by the people who know about these things..the Kent Wildlife Trust.
KWT will be "managing the land with the aim to create a nature reserve to be enjoyed by the whole community".
If we step outside the Port Wars for the moment, and Peter I believe you are on the steering group of the People's Port the opposition to DHB...but most people, myself included, outside of that particular contest will surely love this idea. We know how popular all things to do with nature are on this website alone.
In an era when we worry about the urbanisation of geen England then moves like this are very welcome.
PaulB with all due respect, and also respect for fighting the corner of this particular reign of the DHB.....
Anything they do at the moment, has to be treated with the superstition.
They have been landlords of this derilict site for years and years....
Why now....? It is a sprat to catch the shoal of mackerel ........
I will say, what is different, about this, we actually are told, albeit after the event, what the present DHB are doing with the land belonging to the people of Dover...

Yes it's a welcome move indeed. But one has to be cynical about the timing. However in the big scheme of things it's a sideshow.

Yes indeed Charlie and Peter and I see where you are coming from with the cynicism angle..however how its come about matters not, we are still getting a nature reserve..
But no Im not a spokesman for DHB Charlie...Im just the purveyor of the news...the messenger.
