I took a walk down to the new pier yesterday. Positives: the curve of the black railings, the lamps with their anti-gull spikes, and the little drainage holes. Medium negative: no prohibition on cycling; the pier's too narrow for that and the ones dressed as if they've stepped out of the pages of a cycling magazine will use it as a race track. Big negative: I experienced no real sense of the sea: the arm coming out beyond has the pier in a half-nelson and, especially at the end, there's a feeling of enclosure rather than openness. Even the old Charles II walk gave you that thrill. But the marina pier's a poor relation to the Prince of Wales, whose lighthouse sits forlornly out of reach to the south west, wondering where all the life has gone.
