An admirable fellow, the out-going incumbent. Though he did not seem to be the correct 'fit' to lead the Conservative Party as prayer. He will surely be Oxbridge's gain if no great loss to the present government.

Rowan Williams was always the wrong choice. The position needs a turbo-vicar not an academic theologian. John Sentamu would be an admirable choice with Michael Nazir-Ali to replace him at York. In today's PC climate only ethnic minority figures can say what needs to be said without fear of reprisals.

John Sentamu's pitching of his tent before the altar inside his Cathedral would indeed endear him to the Tories if he had been so acting to point-up the plight of our homeless, but such was not his target...

sentamu would be a popular choice with traditionalists, outspoken and courts publicity which would be good for the church.
what to me is wrong is that the choice is not left to the loyal supporters who attend week in week out and put their hands in their pockets to keep the churches running.

Yes indeed! Desmond Tutu, an example to us all. I had the great pleasure of meeting him two years ago.

Rowan Williams led with charm and intelligence, so no wonder he was not a popular choice. Sentamu has written for the new Sun "newspaper" so has immediately lost any respect I may have had for him - and I did, once.

the job has to be about reaching out to as many people as possible therefore a top selling tabloid newspaper must be a good way of doing so.
But it also sends a message about what is acceptable and what isn't. It isn;'t as simple as lets preach to the masses.
