Not a lot of money required I would have thought that KCC and the two parish councils involve could find the money between them.

Hi Howard
Good to see the story has gained a bit of traction, and thanks for sharing. The information in there is a tad wrong, and came in advance of us sending out our press release next week.
Unfortunately, as you can imagine it can be very difficult for us to get funding for our work, and therefore we have to get out there and raise a large proportion of the funds ourselves. I think the sum we are looking at needing to raise by July time is 78k. The parish councils have so far both been very receptive and will help us spread the message over the coming 6 months.
We will be hosting local roadshows in March, and it would be great if anyone here could come along and learn a bit more then. I will post the dates on here shortly if that is OK?
Please do ask me if you have any questions at all.
Thanks,
Sam

Blimey Sam I was just googling the Parish Councils Websites one of which is down and the doesn't mention anything. Good to see them being receptive but was rather hoping they might find some small amount of funding to kickstart things. Please keep the Forum informed of any local roadshows so that as many people as possible are made aware.

Sam, I hope you manage to raise the money.
It might help if more people knew of the existence of this reserve, unless interested in wildlife or are a walker many will never have heard about Lydden Temple Ewell National Nature Reserve.

Thanks! Howard- It's still early stages and we haven't met the parish councils yet (but are booked to)
Jan- I think you are right, a lot of our activities will be about increasing awareness of what is a really beautiful site and an asset to the community, as well as a habitat that has become increasingly rare and fragmented, and needs protecting. I'm sure many live within a stones throw of the site but now little or nothing of it,
The roadshows will be at the following locations:
Date Time Venue
09.03.2017 2pm-5pm Lydden Village Hall, CT15 7EX
13.03.2017 1:30pm – 4.30pm Whitfield Village Hall, CT16 3NA
16.03.2017 1pm-4pm The Fox Public House, Temple Ewell, CT16 3DU
Would be great to see some of you there

So who actually owns the land right now?

Kent Wildlife Trust own the reserve, and there are two adjacent parcels of land owned privately that we are hoping to purchase (one 5 acre, one 8 acre)

Sorry to be obtuse but do you mean owned by private individuals?

I personally do not have any dealings with the purchasing of the land; I do believe they are private individuals, but I dont think at this stage I can give any more information than that

We were delighted to see this, and the amount of people sharing it. A good start in raising awareness of the site.

'Kent Wildlife Trust is the largest independent conservation charity in Kent and has generated and invested about £2.5 in the Dover area in the last five years.'
That works out at ten bob a year...

A reminder for anyone that wants to come along and learn more about Lydden Temple Ewell Nature Reserve, our first roadshow is at Lydden Village Hall on Thursday from 2-5pm.
We will have a stand with further information on the reserve and our work more widely, and a presentation on our work at Lydden Temple Ewell. Please come along and feel free to ask any questions you like.

Hello everyone,
Just to update those that are interested, we have started our appeal to raise the funds to purchase this crucial extension to Lydden Temple Ewell, and we are currently 60% of the way there. We have had a lot of support from the Dover area, including individuals in Temple Ewell & Lydden, but we still have a fair way to go.
To find out more or donate the website is
http://www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/lydden-temple-ewell-appeal
If you haven't had a look for a couple of months there's a lot more information there about the sorts of species that will benefit, as well as improving access for those who enjoy visiting the reserve.
Many Thanks,
Sam
