By now I was getting fed up being the army ,but my time in the nick was not a happy time. After being told all rules and what I must do .I was told to press all my kit to the right sizes and lie it out on the bed ready for it to be looked at by the duty officer and stand by the bed in my no1 dress and the locker open so he could see it was all clean.
He came in I had to shout out my name and number "2252---- pte Matcham sir my kit and myself are ready for inspection sir"
And without even looking at me or the kit he turn the bed over and kicked my kit over the floor,
"You might think it was ready Matcham but I did not ,do it again."
And this was just the first day so I done it again and again till he passed it,
There was two beds in the jail the other one did not have anything on it just springs showing so for rest of my time in the nick I went to sleep on that so that my kit was always ready .
Lights went out at the time they said they would I was told I could not read or write even a letter home all the time I was inside.
I had to polish etc and dust the guard room out in the morning and before going to bed.
And the work I had to do in the cookhouse was no better, I had to wash all the pots and pans wash the floors etc and they even at times had me washing the bones of meat before putting them in the bins.
