People - including women! - can get taken in and "brainwashed" into doing things they might otherwise not do. Remember the convents of 1950s Ireland. I do (only just and possibly only in my families memory!), with a shudder. Even the more recent ones, like the one I attended when I was in my teens. Remember the child soldiers who come to believe what they are doing is "normal". Think of the women who believe it is their choice to wear a burkha - and I realise that one is a little controversial. Think of the men who believe they are right when they hit their wives - who convince themselves that it is "good for them" or they "asked for it". We are capable of such self-deception, and sadly it can bleed into other peoples lives when we believe we have to impose it on them.
