Each time I go into my HSBC branch in Dover and other banks I use in Dover I am asked if I would prefer to do everything on line .
I have tried to explain that the more I do on line the more chance the bank will have on closing the branch .
I hear now HSBC are closing over 60 branches .
Over the years the branch had been given less and less authority to do things .
Is this the way we are heading ?

As much as I hate the thought of my local HSBC closing I can understand why so many branches will cease to exist. The people who have business or complicated accounts might miss their branch.
I have not visited mine for about a year and that was only to pay a cheque into my account. I have gone paperless and so far have never had a problem, I do online banking so check my account virtually every day and I use cash back at the supermarket when I shop when I need proper money. I refuse to use the phone when HSBC have called simply because they have yet to introduce a system that I feel is as secure as it could be, they always start by asking a personal question as any fraudster might do.
Arthur, even when some chancer tried to use my credit card overnight I saw the problem the following day when checking my online account the money was reinstated with no further problems.

I guess I was playing devil’s advocate to a certain extent since I also use online banking and find it does everything I need. However, there is still a large section of the population who can’t avail themselves of these services and closing high street branches causes them difficulties. Perhaps the solution is a one stop shop where all high street banks can have a desk. I think this is being trialled in some areas.

Yup. Works as an interim measure. Eventually there will not be enough 'trade' to even keep these open. Personally I can't remember the last time I used cash. Even the supermarket trolleys no longer need a coin in them as hardly anyone is carrying money.

I would much prefere things as they was with banking but i,ve realised i have to change.I,ve recently gone onto online banking, not as daunting as i thought once the missus showed me how.I got to know how it worked by simply transfering £10 to her account and then she did to mine so i could see how easy it works. My bank is still in town so i can still pop in if i wish.My next venture into technology will be a card machine in the next few weeks as in my work so many now want to pay this way.
