Well not me exactly but stunned Orange mobile phone call centre workers were told they can keep their jobs - if they move to the Philippines and bosses informed workers that those who relocated 6,600 miles away would get an allowance for RICE - and £1.78 a month towards laundry bills.
Orange is transferring 40 call centre jobs from Darlington, Co Durham, to Manila, capital of the Philippines. Orange said all 40 Darlington staff had been offered other work in the UK and should never have been given a relocation option. A spokesman said: "This was an HR error, for which we apologise.
"We are in contact with the 40 employees involved and will be making it clear that we're not asking or expecting people to move to Manila." The average Orange employee's salary over there is approx £200 per month not forgetting the rice allowance!

Actually Manila is not too bad a place to live so maybe the Orange workers will change their minds after viewing these snapshots....

Lovely photos Marek - the second one looks like it's brewing up for a storm.
£200 salary for a month, no wonder they want to move their call centre - but will it deter users and make them change their telephone service provider ?
The biggest aggravation I have with indian call centre is the lack of understanding - I can't understand their accent and they have no idea what I'm saying - hope the Filipinos English is good.
I understood that many of the companies who took their call centres abroad, brought them back as it was bad for their business.

Well, if I used Orange, which I don't, the companies lack of regard for the UK might push me towards another provider.

I've had some great times in Manila Marek when I was sailing with the Blue Funnel Line in 1952/56. My God, nearly sixty years ago, how time flies. I suppose it has changed beyond recognition now. Cebu was another place we went to.
