It amazes me how many people use coffee shops.

Off the top of my head we have Mean Bean, Brunch, La Salle Verte, Dickens Corner and Chaplins all fairly close to Costa but all seem to be doing good business. I rarely have a coffee out but remember the Eight Bells serving up an excellent one at about half the price of the proper coffee shops.

Coffee to go. Right next door to La Salle Verte. Easily missed so most seem to walk past it. Lovely cup o'tea though and every so friendly people.

Wouldn't describe that as a coffee shop Sue, one of our members sang the praises of "coffee to go" a while back adding that it is surprisingly big inside. Forgotten Illy's in Market Square which I used to have a late breakfast in during its previous ownership.

In fairness Howard those are all cafes that do coffee, whilst Costa is a coffee shop that does some cakes and sandwiches otherwise you would have to include all restaurants, fast food joints and most pubs to the list.
Incidently 'coffee to go' is one of the cheapest for drinks and baguettes in town.

This has to be the future of town centres, progressively moving from "shopping" to socialising and entertainment

Fair point; in other words, providing something you actually have to be there in person to get.

Including GP surgeries and dentists. Just think how that would improve footfall.

I have spent a very pleasant morning in Sandwich I was amazed to see a Costa Coffe shop there.A delightful town which is a pleasure to visit. At least you can walk around with out the begging and drunks.Maybe they do have a few of these undesirables ,but Dover does seem to attract these people.Canterbury is difficult to get to now so maybe Sandwich beckons .
