  Smart phones access the web automatically for some functions without us realising. It was only whilst trying to find something in an i phone manual I discovered this, prior to that I didn't know. People do disable the function (it varies by phone) and then take them back to the phone shop as something they are trying to access no longer works because, yes you've guessed it's no longer connecting to the web!
