Last year I got called in for a GP appointment by a computer - after an annual checkup my results and profile were automatically analysed and the program decided I'd breached a threshold, next time my records were accessed there was a message from the computer for me to make an appointment.
Recently I got a replacement phone, by default a fancy Android one with all the gadgets and web browsing that I never wanted or use. I've just finished a half hour phone call to O2 after finding some charges for web access on my bill - "Oh yes sir, that's normal, your phone will be accessing the web automatically of its own accord, it's designed to do that" ! GGGGrrrrrrrr
I know I've got grumpy old man syndrome but is there any wonder, anyone else got any horror stories?

I have this web-browsing facility on my phone too. I disabled it, but cannot now remember how. I disabled the Blue-tooth too.

Tom, from my experience this morning you are well qualified for a job with O2 customer support!

Smart phones access the web automatically for some functions without us realising. It was only whilst trying to find something in an i phone manual I discovered this, prior to that I didn't know. People do disable the function (it varies by phone) and then take them back to the phone shop as something they are trying to access no longer works because, yes you've guessed it's no longer connecting to the web!

i had never heard of that one, charging for something not requested sounds like a con, doubtless the small print in the contract will cover them.

ray,
does being in the company of/having to put up tories on the council for 25 years count lol???
seriously though most people just go through life and enjoy things around them
its when the minority of people decide they want to disturb everyone elses lives,
a good example of this was a recent documentary on a fooball match in leeds
when the played millwall
the cost of policing the day came to £90.000!
a minority of fans from both teams were wanting violence against each
caught upm with this were normal fans trying to get to/watch the game.
also there were everyday people going about there business in leeds.

Keith, those 25 years, you volunteered for that
I don't understand the football violence, presumably the cost of policing was paid by the club which involves a hike on everyone's ticket.
Just found another one while tv was on over lunch, Formula 1 only on Sky Sports this year if you want to watch every race live - ggggrrrrrrrr

yes the club pays
but the inconvience to all?
to see the violence was horrid, leeds fans even attacking the police dogs!
do travel to a lot of games and been lucky to avoid all this
although i was at gillinghams ground the fatal day the fulham fan got stabbed to death.
wasnt a pleasant end to the day

will they do the same as itv and have ad breaks during the race?
from the little bit i know about formula 1 all the action is at the start then a few times during the race so nobody knows when they will be,knowing sky they will ask the drivers to stop every now and again.

I recall uproar during a race when it was on ITV, Schumacher was having a ding dong with someone in the last 10 laps, they hung on to watch the pass for as long as they could before they had to get an ad break in, but the pass, the one and only decent one of the race, happened during the ad break.

Ray I cant comment on the Andriod but I have an iPhone which works in a similar way. I have to turn off Data Roaming when abroad otherwise I come back to a huge bill for Internet I have not used. It's constantly updating apps etc without me knowing, it does this by accessing the web. Probably best take it into a shop and see if you have a similar option where you can turn it off.

To be honest it is very rare for ordinary fans to get caught up in football violence - there is a dress code amongst the gangs that go to football for violence that shows if you are up for a rumble or not - those of us who used to be involved and those who still are know what this is - suffice it to say it is not wearing the shirt and/or scarf of ones team.

Helen, thanks, but I took it to the shop and they thought they had done that for me but the phone still knew how to get round it!
I spent half an hour on the phone this morning with a techy guy who finally knew what he was talking about (he had to call me back on my landline cos the signal kept breaking up!) but even he had a few surprises talking me through the menus - "Hm, it shouldn't do that" was a favourite quote!
I remember reading some horror stories about Iphones when they first came out and people were getting bills in the thousands of pounds because they didn't realise they had apps activated when they went abroad.
My next phone is going to be one of those with massive buttons that only does calls!

Yes Paul always a good idea.
Ray; fortunately thanks to all the complaints made they have now 'capped' how much can be charged abroad in one day...still certainly not worth the money tho!
