Many countries in the Far East are militarily strong regional powers.
China, Taiwan, Vietnam, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia.
Any one of these countries can place hundreds of thousands of soldiers on alert at a moment's notice. Doubt they need us there!

Indeed no, Howard. I was aware some time back that China claims about 90% of the South China Sea, almost to the costs of the countries to the south thereof.
But all these regional countries, and a few others in the vicinity, have enormous armies, and as many of them are separated from China by sea, it would make warfare very complex.
I suppose the talk is of oilfields under the seabed, which would make it a job for the navy of any country wanting to have a slice of the cake, unless they agreed with each other.
But our interests in that sense seem more on the other end of the world, in the Falklands area. So this should exonerate us from the South China Sea scenario.
