This programme is a huge international hit and its attraction is that it depicts an almost idyllic rural England that conforms to the perceptions that foreigners have (murders apart that is...).
It has a formula that is a commercial success and to mess with that would be wrong. It would also be terribly insulting to have token black people just to conform to a 'pc norm'. I have not been exactly an avid watcher of this programme but Paula loves it and I have watched it with her a few times, last might in fact and it is a reminder of a particular type of England that is now a rarity. I have to say I enjoyed it.
This rural 'old England' does still exist, though it is rare and threatened. Villagers in the area where it is filmed were interviewed and backed Mr True-May saying that it would be a rarity to see a coloured chap in their neck of the wood.
