Well let me see
Firstly this is from the Daily Fail so lets take it all with a rather large dose of Sodium Chloride
1. New rights for teachers to restrain unruly pupils without having to record such incidents - this needs to be defined and very clear definitions of what is considered to be unruly behaviour that warrants restraint and what restraint constitutes - it must NOT be a licence for teachers to commit common assault on pupils (no matter how much the little so and so's deserve it)
2. Increased financial penalties for parents who fail to ensure their children attend school, - again given that truancy and attendance issues tend to be largest in poorly performing schools in poor areas perhaps this is ill advised. Perhaps fixing the social problems of these areas and fixing the problems of poor staff might reduce truancy etc.
3. More male teachers to provide role models for children with absent fathers, - Yes this is sensible, but too many male teachers have been driven out of the profession by those that see all heterosexual men as rapists and paedophiles
4. Anonymity for staff accused of mistreating children to protect against malicious allegations, - this needs clarity and proper definitions as to when it applies and when it doesnt. The creation of uncertainty of whether the allegation will lead to disclosure will stop 99% of all malicious accusations.
5. The power to search children for any item, such as mobile phones or iPods, - Yes but again with the same constraints that apply to all civil authorities with regard to search and seizure
6. Heads allowed to expel pupils without fear of being overruled, - Yes this is a long overdue reform - Heads do not use this sanction lightly and didnt in my day
7. An end to the requirement for teachers to give parents 24 hours' notice of a detention - No it is bad enough that there are "latch key kids" without exacerbating this problem - parents have a right to know/be informed that their child is being kept in after school and need to have the opportunity to make necessary arrangements etc.
