Ah! directors..that fine body of men and wimmin who keep our jobs safe and secure.. so that we can all sleep safely in our beds without fear of having our roof repossessed. Do you remember those more deferential days, when we all doffed our tweed caps to guys like these.."morning Sir George..how are the kids today Sir George"..."there all fine Wiggins!"

We knew our place then. Whether we were treated well we didnt really know but we relied on these guys for our jobs.

Whats changed in the modern era? Well not a lot..we dont quite doff our caps in the same way, as the unions came and saved our total humiliation. However the suspicion that directors were/are not all they were cracked up to be has grown over the years from a little acorn into a mighty oak. The newspapers nowadays are investigative and let us know the dark side regularly and often. So the rosy glow of cosy subservancy has vanished.

This brings me to the directors at MG Rover. A huge workforce were depending on these guys, they looked up to them, they thought their families were secure, so carried on working hard. These directors took over the firm for just £10 and strode out to save all the jobs amid cheers and flag waving. But no...it never came to pass...it was just a veneer.

The directors paid themselves well and shafted the humble workforce big time. The guys on the shopfloor kept on working at breakneck pace, thinking all was well, but all the profits were being skimmed. The directors paid themselves £42,000,000 pounds and the workforce went to the wall.
