Messerschmitt Bf109E-4
- 22 August 2013 08:39241518This aircraft, the 'Emil' is best known for its role as the main German fighter during the Battle of Britain, with the 'yellow nosed devils, being seen frequently over Dover dogfighting with Spitfires and Hurricanes.
This model depicts the Emil in its last campaign in the Balkans during 1941. It was replaced by the improved Me109F, the 'Frederich', that year. It was flown by German ace Wolfgang Lippert stationed in Larissa Greece.
The kit is an Eduard one in my normal 1/32 scale. This was a real pleasurable build, despite a number of fit issues that were easily overcome with plenty of dry fitting and filler. Paints are Vallejo Model Air.

Did they get the flag the right way up?
And, I suppose the pink lines are significant also, but in what way?

The lion is an emblem painted on by Lippert's ground crew of the British lion bent over and about to take a cannon shell (presumably from Lippert's 109) up the posterior. We know it is the British lion because it has a Union Flag hanging from its tail, that may be what appear to be the pink lines your refer to unless they are the red 'no walk' lines on the wings.
A thought about Lippert. He died in a British hospital in Egypt from an embolism having hit his head when bailing out of his aircraft. - 22 August 2013 09:52241562Ah yes, one in the 'eye', for Blighty.

I have done a bit of research on the build and found a photo of Gabreski in the plane I will be modelling. I plan to do it in its D Day colours with full invasion stripes top and bottom. The photo was taken in July a month later when (like the picture above on the box lid) the top stripes had been painted out and a couple more kills were added
