Messerschmidts over Dover?
- 30 November 2010 21:4182504I recently obtained the photograph below. It purportedly shows three Messerschmidt bf109s in formation over our cliffs. However, I'm not convinced due to unfamiliar landmarks - what do you think?
Also, the aircraft to the right of the flight looks a little like a Focke-Wulf fw190 due to the engine cowling shape, but as it is blurry, I'm not sure. Any opinions?

a former battle of britain pilot was addressing a womens institute meeting and kept referring to fokkers, the chair person sensing the unease with the ladies present interjected to say that speaker was referring to planes.

I must admit I wondered if the Luftwaffe would really have risked three fighters and a spotter plane flying slowly in formation for a photo opportunity so close to enemy shore. Could it be somewhere near Calais? However, the possibility exists that it may have been taken by a British aircraft as the photo is marked as belonging to the RAF museum.
To be really geeky, I reckon the observing aircraft from which the photo was taken was a Henschel Hs126 from the arrangement of the wing spars in the foreground. I'll get my coat. - Brian Dixon
