Yes I know Howard that the cable car is a separate issue, which is why I din't comment on it on the thread but welcomed back the original topic about a memorial or monument on the Seafront.

Paul, I see no reason why we in Dover have to have another was memorial such as has been suggested, without any public view being taken into account as to what should be placed there.

Eighteen British pilotes lost their lives in an attempt to prevent three German war-ships reaching naval bases in Germany. So! I saw a plaque dedicated to this on Eastern Heights; it's interesting and deserves it's place there, which is where the guns were situated which also tried to prevent the Channel Dash.

In Dover there are memorials on the Sea Front to the British service men and women who fought in the Second World War. Now in the year 2011, with all the economic turmoil in Britain and in Europe, and Germany (especially Germany) and Britain and France, and may-be a few other northern coiuntries in Europe, in deep economic trouble and bailing out other bankrupt European economies, do you really think that our generation today is so dedicated to another war memorail for a war that finished long ago?

May-be not that many people want what you suggest, and may-feel we have other things to think about too and to commemorate. May-be not that many people have such bad feelings against the Germans as a People in the year 2011 and don't want to equiperate every day of our life to a war against Germany!

I don't agree with the EU, but I certainly do believe in friendship with our European neighbours and in good economic and cultural relations, and in looking a aspects of cooperation and good neighbourly friendship, and in looking forwards to the future and not just backwards!

Immagine the Serbs and Croatians sitting there for the next 50 years putting up war memorials about each-other! Many among them may also like to have different and positive sentiments to think about too Are there no other aspects of life that you can think of for a memorial or monument on our Seafront?

As a dedicated Chrisitian, I do not follow up on your personal view about war and war memorials everywhere, I have different views in life to just war, war, war!

Also, I read a few words of the link above in the thread, got no further than the second phrase, saw some pictures, and reckon that the metal of all those defunct war-planes could bring in quite some money as scrap metal. I am not at war with Germany, Paul, and our Country is not at war with Germany.

Also, on Western Heights, I like to see the British and French as Allies, and am extremely glad that the French never landed in Britain in Napoleon's days and were never combated on Western Heights, that neither we nor they lost lives in Dover in that period.

Yes, my version of Churches and the Fair Lady Britannia is not necessareily the same as other peoples' views, but it does uphold peace and prospeprity and a forwards-looking attitude to our European neighbours. My view of the Light Tower Church overlooking Dover and the Sea is not based on a backwards looking war that goes on and on and on.

May-be you should read a little about how many German cities got bombed and blasted to smithereens in the latter part of the Second World War and call it quits, Paul! They suffered enough! They've been punished enough. Enough, Paul! I have had enough of it!
