From the very outset of starting our campaign to move the Miners Statue, it was always our intention to help replace it with something more appropriate to Dover. Having worked on the Herald, I was particularly interested in having a memorial for that terrible tragedy. We worked hard with certain people to no avail; we even tried to make it a memorial to all civilian lives lost in the channel, with no joy. We then teamed up with the person who was organising the Merchant Navy Statue, with the intention to replace that with the Miner, all went quiet and then it appeared further down the seafront. The day before we moved the statue DHB were presented with the anchor from the vessel being salvaged from the south entrance and was told it might be placed on the concrete plinth we left behind. I hope something appropriate is placed there soon.
