    One of Britain's leading architects has drawn up designs which will see the redevelopment of a Kent resort.

    Sir Terry Farrell was commissioned by local businessman Roger De Haan, owner of Folkestone's abandoned Rotunda fun park and derelict former ferry port.
    He has submitted his plans for the "seafront urban quarter" to Shepway District Council, which he said would "reconnect the town with the seafront".

    They include 1,000 new homes - many of them flats - shops and public spaces.
    Sir Terry said the harbour and seafront would also be restored, and there would be amenities, with the potential for water sports.

    Philip Carter, founder and president of Go Folkestone - a pressure group dedicated to boosting the town - said the planning application was very important and was all "to do with confidence".

    "That application going in, even though it's an outline application, shows confidence.

    "His team has the confidence to put it in," Mr Carter said.
