That's Horace (Holyer); he gives out leaflets and information whenever there's a POC cruise ship in.
Horace speaks a number of Western European languages and very knowledgeable of all things related to tourism - he's a good guy.

Howard is right Paul, Horace gets a small payment from WCCTA, not sure if his payments are supported by DTC or not.
He knows a lot about Dover's history and often gets his own tourists to pay him for a walking tour.
He was going to be one of the guides of the Historic walks I created (with others) a couple of years ago. They never got of the ground either.

Will the trolley be required when the TIC is in the museum in the Market Square right next door ?
Been nice knowing you :)
All historic towns and cities should have a guided walk. Edinburgh, London, many many others, all have thriving walks which pulse with history. How much more history does Dover need to qualify?!

There were 3 walks with different themes Bern:
Frontline Dover - about Dover during the Second World War.
Napoleonic Dover - all about the Western Heights
The Walls of Dover - the ancient walls and gates of Dover.
First of all there was trouble with Public Liability Insurance, but we had the guides (Horace, Stewart Dimmock, Chris Precious and Georgette Rapley - all know lots about Dover's history so they were well qualified); then we got pledges for the insurance, but by that times the guides had moved on, so it never got off the ground.
All the information in the walks had been checked by Derek Leach of the Dover Society and Jon Iveson, the (DDC) Tourism Manager, both of whom of course know just above everything on Dover.
Paul - Scotchie, if WHPS would like to take them over, I am more than happy for you to do so.

Maybe in the future Roger - we have a lot on our plates with the Open Weekends, walks, tours, work days and the Grand Shaft open each month (+ whereever the developments take us) !!!
I am sure they could be insured and advertised by WCCP as we do and have done similar walks for them??
Been nice knowing you :)

Thanks for that Paul.
Getting the people to take the walk - guides-wise is the biggest obstacle. We were envisaging asking £2.00 or £2.50 per person for them, which was thought to be very reasonable and they could be promoted at the cruise terminal, the two accommodation groups web-sites, whitecliffscountry and other website, also the VIC etc.

Horace is a great guy, I have known him for years and yes he speaks several European languages and as said knows a lot about Dover's past a true Dover gent. However do not get him talking about the merchant navy and cross channel ships in particular or you will be still be there next day
Great Guy
