I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

As a Cllr I must call ,by Mr or Mrs not to do so is not right, anyway my Dad always said"Son it is Mr or Mrs not first names unless family because it is Rude to call them by first names. And My DAD was 6ft 6ins and coming in at about 18stone,so what he said went.

I was always taught that it was very rude to call people by their Christian names, one just did not do that unless they were long time friends or children.

times have changed mrs hollingsbee, my doctor, consultant and all in the n.h.s call me howard.
when people wear name tags it only gives their name so in the case of women we would not know whether they were mrs, miss or ms.

I find it very difficult to call people I am used to calling Mr/Mrs...... at work by their first names even when invited to. It can be really awkward at social events. It was how I was brought up. I have no idea what my friends' parents first names were. Having said that I would think it very odd if my childrens' friends called me anything other than Judith!

Howard - Yes, I know times have changed, but old habits die hard, especially when one has had one's own business or worked as a solicitor's clerk etc. and had a father with a lot of Victorian ideals!
