Since this morning our (and many other households) gas supply is off due to a gas leak and water seepage; lots of vans around the village and they are firstly trying to contact all households to make sure their mains switch is off, BEFORE they can start to do repairs. Now they have handed out leaflets to say as an emergency we can go to EASTRY VILLAGE HALL if we have no heating etc.
We are fairly OK with two plug in elec heaters, but have no on top hot water, we can however cook and heat meals !
Our phone is also not working - BT have been notified.
Things could be a lot worse, at least we are not flooded.

sounds serious, luckily the temperature is a lot higher than normal for this time of year.
assuming that everyone affected can get to eastry village hall, what will be there for them?
this sort of emergency has been heavily discussed on another thread and there seems to be no provision for sleeping in village halls.

The gas supply only went into the village in about 1993 so the pipes are nice and modern, I wonder if there has been some sort of cave in underground because of ground water.

I presume Eastry Village Hall will be warm and there will be food and drinks available?

We have a good village hall, modern facilities, heating etc. which I had assumed would be used in emergencies, and was surprised we were notified about Eastry.

sounds like you are best off staying put kath.
a) You can have a hot meal at home.
b) the electric heaters will at least take the chill off.
c) most important of all you sleep in a comfortable bed.

I wondered why they picked Eastry maybe they thought the village hall was heated by gas but most villagers could have told them otherwise. Keep warm all of you in the village and I hope supplies are back on again soon.

Thanks Jan, just got it connected again by two very helpful Gas Services men who I think, with others have been in the village most of the day.
They have just put the mains switch on and lit the pilot light inside the gas fire and checked. Warm water shortly !
Problem seems to have been that water got into the gas pipe near EASTRY POND - which flooded across the road this week.
Because so many people were affected there were a lot of workers on it. Excellent work !
There were over 100 properties in Tilmanstone affected but I dont know how many outside the village.

That is good news, if water got into the pipe I wonder if there was an underground break which could have been devastating to that part of Eastry if it went bang.
For once the flooding might have done something good.

the decision to choose eastry village hall seems even stranger in the light of this.

I heard from someone who lives near Brook Street that spring(s) were coming up in the road ! Also he said his garden was partly flooded.
Obviously the name 'Brook Street' is appropriate.

We had a very nice, apologetic letter from the Gas Services, who could not have done more, or quicker, to remedy the problem, we did not expect it to be restored as quickly.
