I don't agree that night flights means East Kent gets second best. Permitting some night flights (with restrictions) will give the future airport operator (we hope!) the ability to attract new customers. For freight, airports have to have some degree of the flexibility so that time sensitive cargo is not diverted to other airports because of restrictive operating hours. It's that simple. Most of BA's cargo is carried in the hold of their passenger aircraft. However, they do lease a number of dedicated 747 freighters (three, I believe). They did consider moving to Manston some years ago but were put off by the restrictive operating hours. It would undoubtedly be a major coup for Manston to secure this business, and would raise the profile of the airport with other potential customers. It's clear that passenger operations will, at best, be limited at Manston but freight and possibly charter could work IF it is allowed to.
