  People quite simply do not know how to behave in public any more. And those used-to-be treasured qualities of compassion, empathy and courtesy are no longer valued in the same way. Sad, very sad. And yet, when those qualities are demonstrated when dealing with young, vulnerable, disadvantaged or sad people the response is, by and large, positive and warm. So underneath it all, perhaps they are still valued traits. I hope so. There is no excuse for discourtesy. And even less for outright cruelty.
