Caught the tail end(no pun intended) of a programme last evening about woofers and it transpires the 9 million households in the UK have at least one canine. When you consider there are probably many more cats as they are easier to look after, then add in all the budgies, parrots, goldfish and all the exotic pets that people collect now and I would think that humans are outnumbered by other creatures living in houses and flats.

I should think it is a sure thing if you include pet mice, rats and house rabbits all of which are prolific breeders. I refuse to include spiders as I fail to see how anyone would want one as a pet.

Much as I like having a dog or cat around the place, more than one I find is too many. The lady out of picture never has less than five at any one time, Keith will know who i am referring to. Incidentally the porker at the front here is not trying to attack me, she took a shine to me and drop kicked me every time she saw me which I believe to be a compliment from a dog.

We just have cat but we did once own a giant african millipede.Never really wanted it but it was given to us as a gift,a strange creature it was and if you picked it up it would squirt a fluid like iodine that would stain your hands yellow for days.It lived for about 4 years.

Earlier in my married days we inherited a tortoise and after he failed to come out of hibernation one spring we found out his family history went back 90 years. He spent his life trying to escape banging his shell against the fence trying to gauge a weakness and digging holes then sleeping over them at night in order to hide his activities. Eventually he did get free and some **** threw him back onto the rockery breaking his carapace. Took him to a vet expecting the worst but his shell was repaired with Bostik and he had a vitamin jab up his khyber which gave him a new lease of life.
We were told to keep him indoors for a month which he spent testing the skirting boards and wall units. Like Andy's Millipede he had a great defence as tortoises hold their urine for months on end and release when they don't like being picked up as I found out to my cost - 3 wash cycles for my clothes.

One of my younger brothers is still embarrassed as he shot our family tortoise with my 22 air rifle when he was about ten. The tortoise survived another 30 odd years though there was a strange growth over the entry point on his shell - some form of lead poisoning I suppose. We used to say he was slowly working up to moving targets.

Seems a pity that dogs are not allowed to have a splash around but rules are rules and those that flout it get hit with extra charges for not paying the fixed penalty, much the same as those who discard cigarette ends.

Dogs, cats, rabbits... Pah! Give me a parrot anyday for its keen sense of justice, unswayed by a wad of seed and a cuttlefish bone:

Much as I love bulldogs they and similar breeds suffer from breathing difficulties, I thought they had brought in a law stop further breeding but can't find anything online.

Nope I've had 3x bulldogs to date so far and all were good breathers. Sensible well established breeders I know have managed to get to grips with the breathing problems this breed suffers from. Bulldogs are not without their faults but looked after properly theyet are a great dog to have around.
