We have had lots of activities at the Station all day, RPI's Police and I think even Social Services seemed to be checking school children who were not at school
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Keith, they were asking questions about any concerns residents might have with regards to the area.
The presence of the Police was probably coincidental, doing a normal trafic control nearby.
The lady and Councillor who questioned me, noted on paper what I had to say.
They questioned all residents.
I said that my concern was for the many Slovak children in this area who always are on the street, they live amid the pollution of the traffic on Folkestone Road and have no play-park to go to, and that because they do not speak a word of English, it would be better to contact them to explain where they could go to play, once a play-park were set up for children.
In fact these children never seem to go for walks in the country-side, have nowhere to play football or tennis, just standing or walking along Folkestone Road in the pollution.
All children would like to have a green place to go out and play.

It was part of "Operation Clean-Sweep".
A Multi-Agency operation involving KCC, DDC and the Police. The Police did attend an accident near the bridge, but they weren't there because of the accident.
It was to consult and determine the major concerns and problems with the area - the PCSO was involved as he is closer to the problem and people (I could have left out the "and" just here and said "problem people").

Alexander
Thankyou for the information, and i hope you don't mind me giving my viewpoint to your coments to them;
1;I don'think there are many 'SLOVAK' as you term them, this is a regular word use, but there are a number of different nationalities within the priory ward
2;You will find a number of these children/parents do speak english, some very
well, others not so well, an some choose to speak it when it suits them.
3; So as not to confuse the issue and the posting change i wont comment on
the council not giving priory a play area all these years later
4'; I do go one step further than just walks, and ask, why don't the majority of
these children attend school? i'm sure this is complicated due to the non english speakers,
barrier, but many schools have overcome this, and it is important if we believe in intergrating?
I think all children do want a place to play, and equipment(swings etc) to play on
anyway, well done #alexander for answering and thankyou

Alex, most of the children speak or are learning english but speak in their own language when gathered together, it is some of the parents who have not bothered.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Although agreeing that 'play' is important in a childs development so is education. I think I may have focused more on getting these long term displaced nationals into some form of school. Maybe a couple of hours English languag lessons in a local church hall. Where they could also enjoy a chat with locals over a tea/coffee and biscuits.
Keith fully agree with your comments regarding the term 'slovak' but that's more down to the gutter press who like to generalise when they refer to ethnic minorities and it's then picked up by the masses.

For what it's worth 'ghetto-ing' certain nationalities is , in my humble opinion, unwise as it hinders intergration and to be honest the more intergrated they become the less animosity would be levelled against them and it would help them blend in.
Generally it's a fear of the unknown that gives rise to anti-immigration feelings. And let's face it most these cultures are alien to Dovorians.

The Priory Forum, last year arranged with the Clarendon & Westbury Community Ass, to hold a family get together of different nationalities run by the parents of these ethnic minorities, this was funded by one of the PF committee, all was going well, until the teenage children or should I say young men came on the scene, after the first week of them attending, they decided to ruin it for everybody else by smashing things up, consequently the evenings folded

that is correct what sheila says, also alex is right about the children never leaving the outside of houses and alleyways.
i have never seen any down the seafront or on the heights, considering the vast majority of the parents have cars there is no excuse for not taking them out sometimes.

Well, I defined them Slovaks because they are from Slovakia and speak Slovak. I'm referring to those in Folkestone Road, which is the area the questions related to.
As I can understand Serbian, and generally can tell the difference between different Slavic languages, I'm pretty sure I didn't give the wrong information there.
So it wasn't any form of generalisation cliche on my part.
As for speaking-not speaking English, I have never heard them speak English, so I assumed they can't, but perhaps they do, I don't know.

all the kids around here speak english, they all have a school place.
sometimes the parents take them to school other times they don't.
