    It became the EEC on the accession of the UK and a couple of other countries, before the referendum or these were changes that were known about at the time, not certain which but I think it was the former.

    It is also far from semantics. There have been massive changes in the operation and role of the organisation that are reflected in the name changes, Common Market to EEC to EC to EU... The EU is a very different beast indeed to the Common Market and the EEC.
