courtesy of the telegraph, not often i am in tune with norman but some home truths here.
The Prime Minister is reported to have had some angry words with Jesse Norman, one of the leaders of the backbench Conservatives who had made it plain that they would not vote for his motion to timetable the Bill to abolish the House of Lords. He might have done better to reflect on why he is committed to give priority to a measure which is not only simply irrelevant to the problems facing the country, but is ill-conceived and dangerously destabilising to the constitution.
He is the victim, not of a Tory rebellion but of his own errors.
Had he not led a monumentally misconceived election campaign in 2010 against a hugely unpopular Labour government, he would have romped home with a substantial majority. Lacking that majority, he then made another misjudgment by entering a coalition with a party with which the Conservatives have profound policy differences.
It was those misjudgments, not the sound conservative instincts and reasoning of those who made it plain that they would oppose the timetable motion to stifle debate on the Bill, which landed Mr Cameron in a quarrel with his own party last night.
